mission statement
The purpose of this website, which offers all its services free of charge, is twofold: - to collect and disseminate information about incidents and trade involving stolen cultural property, an area of illicit activity that is second only to trade in drugs and that amounts to some 4 - 6 billion USD per year (according to FBI, March 1999).
- to offer a source of related information, e.g., publications, security products, safety and salvage plans, addresses of and links to related organizations.
The Museum Security Network receives contributions of content and other non-financial support from around the world. Its approximately 1400 subscribers worldwide are made up of security and other professionals in museums, libraries, national parks, archives, universities, galleries, foundations, and all organizations and individuals involved with cultural property and heritage, security products, salvage and safety programs, and stolen property. The website includes a mailing list, the content of which is moderated. Operating primarily as a news-article clipping service, it also offers a forum for discussions on subjects of interest to the museum security world.
The site is visited more than 2000 times per week.
MSN will remain editorially independent.
