Dear Subscribers,
Yesterday's message by Borislav Surdic initiated quite a lot of
reactions by subscribers, most of which contained a protest against
the Serb's complaint about, collateral, damage to cultural
institutions without any statements about what is happening in
Kosovo. Each and every subscribers received a personal off list
reply. I want to prevent that the MSN list becomes a platform for
political discussions. The following message by Steve Keller covers
most reactions I received, and will be the first and last message
with some political content accepted on the list.
Allow me to make one addition in defense of our Serb museum peers:
all of us must realize that Yugoslav television does not show the
images we see everyday.

The representatives of cultural properties in Yugosalvia wrote:
We are expressing our protest and deepest dissapointment with the
destruction of the cultural heritage in Yugoslavia, as well as our protest
against the silence of our colleagues from all over the world
I am deeply sorry for the loss of cultural property and I, too, protest the
silence of my colleagues all over the world. We have said, "Never again", but
genocide is happening and in all of the perhaps hundred or more news
interviews I have seen with "men and women on the street" in Yugoslavia, not
once have I heard a citizen acknowledge that ethnic cleansing is happening
and that innocent people are dying. At least the NATO countries have taken
action to prevent another Holocaust. They are trying to save cultural
properties. This I am certain. War criminals hide in a palace containing a
Rembrandt because they know that we will not bomb it. I am deeply sorry that
we must be at war. I am glad that we have not allowed this killing and raping
and ethnic cleansing to go on another seven years. It's a terrible dilemma:
save Yugoslavia's heritage and allow another culture to be wiped from the map
or take action and harm cultural treasures. May I respectfully suggest that
the people of Yugoslavia direct their protests to their leaders who can stop
the bombing within hours if they want. And I ask the world to speak
up lest we let history repeat itself.
