Another enigmatic theft in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, The Netherlands

AMSTERDAM. For the second time within one year and a half the Rijksmuseum has been confronted with an enigmatic theft. This time part of a 15th century Gobelin has been stolen. Estimated value: 90.000 Euro.
As usual in cases like this the Rijksmuseum press office released a statement that it is vitually impossible to sell a unique object. More interesting however would have been a statement about the miraculous possibillity to steal objects from the museum rooms without anybody noticing. The disappearance of this Gobelin was discovered beginning of June. It took several weeks to investigate whether this Gobelin was replaced inside the museum. The time this investigation took raises doubts about the internal registrations of museum objects. It still is possible the Gobelin was stolen from a museum room without anybody noticing this for several days. Visitors cannot enter restoration departments or storage rooms. This leaves the option of internal theft wide open. "The Rijksmuseum has one million objects, most of which are stored" according a museum spokesperson. Another investigation must reveal how it has been posible that this object was stolen. The museum claims to be very well protected against theft. However, November 2000 two statues and an antique clock were stolen during opening hours (?). Notwithstanding the extensive CCTV system and digital recording this theft too remained unnoticed and unrecorded. This theft remains unsolved.
The management of the museum says to be ashamed about these thefts. In recent years there have been a lot of internal conflicts in the Rijksmuseum leading to the voluntary and involuntary departure of key staff members.

Weer raadselachtige roof uit Rijksmuseum (Van een verslaggever) AMSTERDAM - Voor de tweede keer binnen twee jaar is het Rijksmuseum geconfronteerd met een raadselachtige diefstal. Ditmaal gaat het om een deel van een gobelin uit de vijftiende eeuw met een geschatte waarde van 90.000 euro. ''Het is nagenoeg onverkoopbaar,'' zegt woordvoerder Boris de Munnick van het Rijksmuseum. ''Zo'n object komt maar heel zelden op een veiling, en als het bij een antiquair te koop wordt aangeboden, wordt het meteen opgemerkt.''
Het gestolen object is een fragment van tachtig centimeter hoog en 68 centimeter breed van een veel groter wandtapijt, dat tussen 1450 en 1475 ergens in de zuidelijke Nederlanden moet zijn vervaardigd. Het heeft daar als wandbedekking dienst gedaan in een kasteel. De totale gobelin is verloren gegaan. Het bewaard gebleven fragment, dat een schildknaap met een zwaard voorstelt, is na de Tweede Wereldoorlog uit een particuliere collectie aan het Rijksmuseum geschonken.
Begin deze maand werd ontdekt dat het deel van het wandtapijt niet meer in de zaal hing waar middeleeuwse kunst wordt geëxposeerd. Direct werd een intern onderzoek ingesteld om na te gaan of het werk zich niet in een atelier bevond of ergens verkeerd in een depot was geborgen. ''Het Rijksmuseum heeft een miljoen objecten, waarvan de meeste zich in tientallen depots op verschillende plaatsen bevinden,'' licht De Munnick toe. Pas toen vaststond dat dat niet het geval was, deed het museum aangifte van diefstal bij de politie en maakte het gisteren de vermissing openbaar.
Onderzoek moet uitwijzen hoe het gobelinfragment kon worden meegenomen. Hoewel het geen groot formaat heeft, is de stof te dik en te stug om het te kunnen oprollen of vouwen. Bezoekers mogen geen tas mee het museum in nemen. De diefstal is in elk geval aanleiding geweest de beveiliging van het Rijksmuseum nogmaals aan te scherpen. Het museum staat bekend als zeer goed beveiligd. Toch zijn ook in november 2000 twee beeldjes en een pendule gestolen, met een waarde van bijna zevenhonderdduizend euro, uit de afdeling kunstnijverheid. Ook die diefstal was een groot raadsel en is nog steeds niet opgelost. Politieonderzoek heeft toen uitgewezen dat de roof het werk is geweest van twee nog onbekende mannen. Ook deze kunstwerken uit de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw zijn heel moeilijk verhandelbaar en internationaal geregistreerd. Het Rijksmuseum heeft een beloning van twaalfduizend euro uitgeloofd voor informatie die tot terugkeer van de voorwerpen leidt. Maar ze zijn sinds de roof nooit ergens opgedoken. Evenals toen schaamt de leiding van het Rijksmuseum zich voor de diefstal. In 1990 is voor het laatst iets uit het museum gestolen. Het museum gaat er juist prat op dat er, met 1,2 miljoen bezoekers per jaar, nagenoeg nooit iets misgaat.

SCHLOSS COLLECTION

On June 25 at 6:15 p.m. Czech Culture Minister Pavel Dostal will formally hand over to French authorities a painting, "Le Juif au bonnet de fourrure," attributed to a painter in Rembrandt's circle. The ceremony will be attended by Noëlle Lenoir, Minister Delegate for European Affairs, and Jean-Jacques Aillagon, Minister for Culture and Communication. The painting was in the Adolphe Schloss collection, which was looted by the Nazis in Paris in 1943, and was subsequently kept at the National Gallery of Prague until today.
I would like to remind you that the Foreign Ministry is continuing to search for and return works of art looted during the war. In 1998 the Foreign Ministry published a catalogue of unrecovered works from the Schloss collection, which was distributed world-wide, and launched an awareness campaign among many professionals and organizations. This led to a collection of data on the whereabouts of works of art and to the restitution of several items.
The ceremony on Wednesday, scheduled for the rue de Valois, is the culmination of four years of research and negotiations by the Foreign Ministry for the work to be turned over to the French authorities./.

Le 25 juin à 18h15 aura lieu la remise aux autorités françaises en présence de Mme Noëlle Lenoir, ministre déléguée chargée des Affaires européennes, et de M. Jean Jacques Aillagon, ministre de la Culture et de la Communication, par le ministre tchèque de la Culture, Pavel Dostal, du tableau 'Le Juif au bonnet de fourrure' attribué à un peintre de l'entourage de Rembrandt. Ce tableau fait partie de la collection Adolphe Schloss confisquée à Paris par les nazis en 1943, il a été détenu par la Galerie nationale de Prague jusqu'à ce jour. Je rappelle que le ministère des Affaires étrangères continue à effectuer des recherches et à procéder aux restitutions d'œuvres d'art confisquées pendant la guerre. En 1998, le ministère des Affaires étrangères a publié le catalogue des œuvres non restituées de la collection Schloss, diffusé dans le monde entier et a effectué une campagne de sensibilisation auprès de nombreux professionnels et organismes. Ceci a permis de réunir des informations précises sur le parcours des œuvres et d'en restituer plusieurs. La cérémonie de mercredi, prévue rue de Valois, est ainsi l'aboutissement de quatre années de recherches et de négociations conduites par le ministre des Affaires étrangères pour la remise de cette oeuvre aux autorités françaises.

Missing half of stolen painting found

Half of Pechstein's work had already been found

The lost half of a stolen German expressionist painting has been found in a sack by the side of a road near Berlin. It can now be put back together with the other half of Max Pechstein's Junges Maedchen (Young Girl), which was recovered along with eight other stolen works in a holdall in May.
The painting can now be reconstructed, police have said. A passer-by found the missing half on the side of the highway, according to the police.

Smashed

The painting was part of the $3m (£2m) haul stolen from Berlin's Bruecke Museum in April. Thieves escaped by disconnecting an alarm and smashing a rear window. Six of the stolen paintings were by Erich Heckel, and one each by Emil Nolde, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Pechstein. Most were painted between 1908 and 1920. The paintings were found rolled up in the holdall in an apartment. Eight were unharmed, but Pechstein's work had been cut in half. The Bruecke Museum houses one of the most important collections of expressionist art, a style that emerged largely in Germany in the early 20th Century. Bruecke - German for Bridge - was the name of a group of German painters whose founders in 1905 included Kirchner and Heckel. Often associated with the freewheeling artistic life of 1920s Germany, the group's works were banned as "degenerate art" by the Nazis after they took power in 1933. The Berlin museum, which opened in 1967, has more than 400 paintings as well as drawings, watercolours and sculptures.
